When the Conversation Changes
By Brea Segger
Every so often, someone says something that makes me think, they've arrived at a different part of the conversation.
Not because their life is falling apart.
Usually it's because it isn't.
They've spent years building something they care about. Sometimes it's a business. Sometimes it's a family. Sometimes it's simply a life that feels steadier than it once did.
If you'd asked them ten years ago what they wanted, they probably would have described the life they're living now.
And yet, somewhere in the middle of our conversation, they'll say something like, "I don't know why this doesn't feel the way I thought it would."
I've heard enough versions of that over the years that it no longer surprises me.
What still interests me is how often people think they've done something wrong.
Almost as though reaching a goal should mean the questions disappear.
Instead, the questions seem to change.
The things that once pulled them forward don't have quite the same pull anymore. Not because they've become ungrateful or lost their ambition. They simply aren't asking life the same questions they were asking ten or twenty years ago.
I've seen people fight that for a long time.
They set another goal. They throw themselves into another project. They tell themselves they just need a holiday, or a new challenge, or to get through this next busy season.
Sometimes those things help.
Sometimes they don't.
What I've come to recognise is that there are some questions achievement can't answer.
Not because achievement has failed. Some of the most fulfilled people I know have built remarkable businesses, raised families they adore, and created lives they once couldn't have imagined.
But there comes a point for some people when success stops being the thing they're looking for.
Not because it isn't valuable.
Because they're no longer asking life the same questions they were asking before.
